BEACHES
CALA GOLORITZE'
The beach, one of the most suggestive in Sardinia, born from a landslide in 1962 is famous for the 143-meter high pinnacle that overlooks the cove, Punta Caroddi, also known to rock climbers for its climbing routes Another characteristic feature of the beach is the natural arch that opens on the right side of the bay. In a ravine between the rocks inside the beach there is also a source of fresh water that flows from the subsoil into the sea. The beach is made up of small white pebbles and sand.
Goloritzé can be reached by sea or by a path that from the Golgo plateau reaches the cove, with a vertical drop of 470 meters and about an hour and a half walk. To arrive by sea, boat transport and rental services are available from the nearby ports of Arbatax and Santa Maria Navarrese (Municipality of Baunei). However, since the summer of 2007, the coast has been closed to motor boat traffic up to 200 m from the shore, in order to protect it from pollution and from the onslaught of tourists, therefore landing is also forbidden.
Cala Goloritzé was declared a "natural monument" of the Sardinia Region in 1993 and an "Italian national monument" in 1995.
CALA MARIOLU
Ispuligedenìe
Ispuligidenìe, also known as Cala Mariolu (from the Neapolitan "mariolu" meaning thief) is a cove in the Gulf of Orosei, part of the territory of the municipality of Baunei. The cove takes its Italian name from a saying of a fisherman from Ponza, who sheltered his freshly caught fish in a small cave near the beach where he moored. The fisherman did not know, however, that the famous monk seal was present in Baunei coast coming out of the water and eating the fish hidden in the cave. The fisherman, who did not know the existence of the seal, exclaimed "Acca cestà Mariolu" (in Italian "there is some thief here") and since then this exclamation gave the name to this cove.
The original and correct toponym is Is Puliges de Nie (or Ispuligedenie), which means 'the snow fleas' and refers to the numerous small white pebbles that form the beach of the cove. Another possible and probably more correct local toponym is Ispuligiada 'e nie which means' splash of snow' which is the image that best describes the beach.
CALA BIRIALA
In the territory of Baunei, halfway between other wonderful paradises of the Ogliastra coast, such as Cala Goloritzé and Cala Luna, and near the Grotta del Fico and Cala Sisine, there is Cala Biriala.
The delightful beach of rounded white pebbles, protected by the limestone cliff that describes an arc of over two kilometers, opens up at the end of the enchanting grove of the same name, made of centuries-old holm oaks, junipers perched on the rock and Mediterranean scrub. It is framed by a rocky arch on the surface of the water against which the waves break. The extremely clear water and rich in fish make it suitable for scuba diving or swimming with a mask and snorkel.
CALA SISINE
Perhaps it is less known than other coves in the Golfo di Orosei - Luna, Goloritzè and Mariolu - but in the same way it will make your holiday a dream thanks to the blue sea and a very white backdrop of round pebbles.
Cala Sisine rises at the end of a codula, that is a gully, once a river bed, today the mouth of a small stream, which originates in the Golgo plateau, in the Supramonte di Baunei. About 200 meters wide, it overlooks the cliffs of the Serra Ovra which from a height of over 500 meters descend steeply to the sea, flanked, almost enveloped, by rocky ridges, while the gorge is covered by the greenery of centuries-old carob and holm oak trees.
Paradoxically, one of the most beautiful seaside resorts of all has a singular mountain aspect. The waters are turquoise due to the play of light of the sun that is reflected in them. The seabed is made of sand with clear calcareous grains and rounded stones, ideal if you will dive with mask and snorkel.
CALA LUNA
The beach represents the mouth of a stream that marks the boundary of the municipalities of Dorgali and Baunei, municipalities which claim their jurisdiction over the site. This stream, called Codula di Luna, develops for a few kilometers, originating on the slopes of Mount Oseli (984 m a.s.l.) in the municipality of Urzulei.
The beach is characterized by the presence of some caves and inlets in the part in front of the shoreline, due to the erosion of the sea on the limestone rock. Cala Luna is famous for its beauty and particularity, and has been used as a setting for the recording of some cinematographic films.
GROTTA DEL FICO
At first the darkness will envelop you, then as you go forward, a place that seems to have stopped 800 thousand years ago will open to your gaze, when the first rooms of the Grotta del Fico were formed, one of the pearls of Ogliastra, in the territory of Baunei. Stalactites, stalagmites and columns of different sizes and colors surround each wall of the cavity, sculpting curious shapes. A system of tunnels and easy walkways will allow you to walk along the fossil bed of an ancient river.
The route goes deep into the earth, carved out by water, inside steep cliffs overlooking the sea of the Golfo di Orosei. Nearby there are enchanting coves that can be reached by sea or by trekking routes: Cala Luna, Cala Biriola, Cala Mariolu and Cala Goloritzè.
At the first exploration (1957), the cave showed all its wild aspect and various naturalistic treasures. The writer Marcello Serra renamed it the 'cave of the Castle' due to the majestic facade overlooking the sea. Open to the public since 2003 and renamed 'del Fico', it has an entrance located seven meters high on the cliff, which you can reach from the boat by climbing a walkway. From the opening you will dominate with your eyes the stretch of the nearby gulf, an amazing seascape. You can visit it with expert guides who will accompany you through the main gallery that leads up to a large well communicating with the sea. Deep inside the cistern, the first speleologists to explore it witnessed an unforgettable sight: in that stretch of water they saw the darting bodies of the monk seals. Here, the first studies were carried out on the animal that may have left the east coast, but of which it is not uncommon to see traces of passage.
